So one of the artists who got FP today, I'm not saying who it is, but she's got a few popular artworks, and it's off by now. But I was reading over the comments and she didn't thank anyone who left a kind word, just went over to critiques. And to every one she wrote, "well, I made the head big on purpose," or "well, I made them that color because I thought blah blah blah".
And it's like - dude, just admit that you made a mistake. Saying that it's anime-style is NO excuse for major proportional issues. The artist then went on to infer that people are being ridiculous for expecting 'realism' proportions in an anime-styled image. Which makes me think, "Wow. That's pretty ignorant."
It's people like that who give other aspiring manga artists - serious aspiring manga artists - a bad rep because they think they don't NEED classical training or any basis in actual fact. I can respect people who admit they make mistakes because no one's perfect, but saying that it's OKAY to have bad proportion that numerous people noted on because 'it's anime' is ridiculous.
I'd be willing to bet fifty bucks that every artist in any given manga collection can draw realism, has taken art courses, or has studied anatomy. Believe it or not, most manga has anatomical strengths. Sure, the boobs might be huge, and the waistline might be small, or the legs might be too long - but that's because the artist is good enough to distort the human figure into stylizations. People will still inherently know that something is wrong if it doesn't click well with that stylization. Leonardo Da Vinci did a series of distortions called the Grotesque series that looked pretty cool because he was so knowledgeable in anatomy for the period - and anime is very much the same way.
I'm not saying that all manga/anime is good (Rave Master, for one). A lot of fan-made works are not the best (sometimes on account of people just wanting pageviews), and a lot of aspiring comickers on the various sites on the net are usually pretty awful. But that's because most of the people who do that are young and haven't realized that oh hey, to be successful as an artist you have to work your ass off learning realism before you can get the cartoons down.
Anyway, people need to get over themselves and take a freaking critique without making excuses once in a while. It makes life so much easier.
And that's my bitchiness for the month. >__>; I'm cool with the layout, stop complaining about it because you're not paying for it. Features could've been better but they're okay.
